Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit help to support families with children and working people on low incomes.
Child Tax Credit supports families with children (this can include children until 1 September after their 16th birthday and young persons aged from 16 but under 20 years old). You can claim whether or not you are in work.
All families with children, with income up to £58,000 a year (or up to £66,000 a year if there is a child under one year old), can claim the credit in the same way.
Working Tax Credit supports working people (whether employed or self-employed) on low incomes by topping up earnings.
You may be able to get extra help with the cost of 'registered' or 'approved' childcare. This is childcare element of Working Tax Credit. You can only get the childcare element if you are working at least 16 hours a week.

Falkirk Council can provide free school meals, and payment towards the cost of school clothing and footwear, for pupils who go to school in the Falkirk Council area. Payments may also be paid where pupils are attending some special schools outside the area.
School meals are free to pupils whose parents (or carers) get Child Benefit, and either Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance (Income Based) or in some cases Child Tax Credit (depending on annual income).
Clothing and footwear grants are available to most parents of pupils who can get free school meals and also may be paid to parents who get Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit (depending on annual income).

EDUCATION MAINTENANCE ALLOWANCE (EMA)

The EMA is a scheme introduced by the Scottish Government to encourage young people to stay in further education and gain qualifications that will enhance their job prospects.
An EMA is a weekly allowance payable to eligible students who have achieved 100% attendance per week. It is payable in arrears on a 2 weekly basis. Two bonuses of £150 each are also available for attendance and achievement, and are payable in January and June.
~ The 2009-10 EMA session is now open and applications are invited from all eligible students, 16 or over before 28th February 2010, returning to a Falkirk Council school after compulsory education.

From 18th September, funding totalling £4 million is to be provided by the Scottish Government to improve play opportunities among five to 13 year olds. 'Go Play', which will run over two years, will help improve facilities and services in areas where children have the least opportunities to develop through play.
Voluntary groups will be able to submit funding bids from 18th September, with support available for regional bodies, small grassroots community organisations and medium and large scale charities.
The fund is being managed by Inspiring Scotland, the national charity which uses skills and money to improve the lives of Scotland's most vulnerable people.
